Ever wonder why that Quarter Pounder with Cheese looks so mouthwatering when you drove by the billboard, yet when you go to the drive-through right after to get one, it looks nothing in real life like it does in that photograph?

Ever wonder how produce is made to look so fresh and colorful with water droplets that seem to last forever? And we all have looked at a menu and wondered how they got the items to look so outrageously delicious? You would be surprised how simple it is to manipulate food in photography. It's all tricks of the trade! Personally one of my favorite subjects to shoot because subjects are usually colorful, there's a lot of creative leeway on how you light it, depending on what the purpose your image will be meant to serve.

Introduction to Black and White Photography. What makes a good Black and White shot?

We will look at the contrast and using textures. How does the camera see the image and how do we create Black and White images in a camera or in post-production. We will look for some good examples and set some exercises.

What is Black and White Photography?
  • Black and white photography is a style of photography that involves capturing images without color. It uses shades of gray to create contrast, texture, and depth, which can give a timeless and classic look to photographs.
    Introduction to B&W Photography ~
In black and white photography, the absence of color can help to simplify the image, drawing the viewer's attention to other aspects such as composition, lighting, and tonality. It can also convey a sense of nostalgia or evoke a particular mood or emotion.

It was great! Mike was helpful and made sure I was understanding everything. It was difficult to find, especially with a little construction going on around the escalator up to the egg. I am new to the area, so maybe it?s a more common location for locals. Once I got there, it went well though! I will be considering other classes from Mike.

I thoroughly enjoyed the meeting and got a lot out of it. I?m already experienced with the exposure triangle, but know very little about night photography or shooting using artificial light. The session provided an opportunity to improve in that area. The model was so helpful. Mike?s tips were spot on for me, mostly about lens choice, exposure and post editing tips. I appreciated his creative use of portable lights and his sharing of some of his experiences and doubts (and how he resolved them) with us. I enjoyed photo talk with the other participants. The setting was an excellent choice and completely new for me, since I shoot mostly nature. I feel much more confident now about photographing in low light settings and interacting with a professional model. It is totally different (better) than working with your family! I hope to participate in more workshops and continue to expand d my photography skillset. Mike was generous with his knowledge, creatively inspiring and a pleasure to work with.

The scavenger hunt was fun and enabled me to have a starting point in what to look for. And reviewing it before hand did open up some dialogue which was helpful. However, I do wish there would've been more suggestions or tips and tricks on setting up the shots. For instance maybe ideas on different angles, composition etc for setting up the shots. We were kind of set free to explore but I could've done that at my own.

She was available to answer questions, provide advice and help with improving participants' efforts. Good morning for picture taking.

I walked away from the class with knowledge and hands on use of these features which allowed me to implement after class. Getting to know ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture! I went to one of my typical birding spots to walk around on Tuesday evening. It was very warm and buggy, and I was feeling frustrated at my lack of good shots and horrendous bugs. I was walking back to my car and this beautiful, healthy looking cottontail hopped into the path ahead of me. I sat down on the grass and he kept hopping towards me. The beautiful golden hour light and close up interaction with the local wildlife made the trip well worth it.
