Food Photography Making Your Dishes Look As Good As They Taste

Ever wonder why that Quarter Pounder with Cheese looks so mouthwatering when you drove by the billboard, yet when you go to the drive-through right after to get one, it looks nothing in real life like it does in that photograph?

Ever wonder how produce is made to look so fresh and colorful with water droplets that seem to last forever? And we all have looked at a menu and wondered how they got the items to look so outrageously delicious? You would be surprised how simple it is to manipulate food in photography. It's all tricks of the trade! Personally one of my favorite subjects to shoot because subjects are usually colorful, there's a lot of creative leeway on how you light it, depending on what the purpose your image will be meant to serve.

Join me in a two hour, Hands-On creative workshop in the art of Food Photography!

Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Albany.

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the Albany Photography Group on Facebook to share your photos after the session.

The scavenger hunt was fun and enabled me to have a starting point in what to look for. And reviewing it before hand did open up some dialogue which was helpful. However, I do wish there would've been more suggestions or tips and tricks on setting up the shots. For instance maybe ideas on different angles, composition etc for setting up the shots. We were kind of set free to explore but I could've done that at my own.
Great event. Exceeded my expectations. Street photography gave me the opportunity to use my 50mm. Lots of photo subjects. Elissa provided us with some foundation principles, had us practice and gave suggestions on photo opportunities (i.e. dogs, depth of field, color and textures). She was available to answer questions, provide advice and help with improving participants' efforts. Good morning for picture taking.
It was a fun, learning experience.

I took this session as I wanted to learn the core features of my camera and the key components I needed to understand in order to move forward with photography! Ivette, nailed it! I walked away from the class with knowledge and hands on use of these features which allowed me to implement after class. Getting to know ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture! Would totally recommend for the newbie seeking clarity as leaning your camera becomes overwhelming! Thanks Ivette, much appreciated!
I found the class to be very informative and helpful. Elissa was fantastic and so knowledgeable. I look forward to getting to know my camera better and taking future classes. Thank you for proving such a wonderful resource.
Elissa was a great instructor and provided helpful skills and tips. She was patient and did a bit of 1-1 with people which was fantastic!

I enjoy taking photos that look as if they are leading somewhere and that?s what inspired me to take a photo like this. I took this in shutter priority mode with the ISO set to 200 and shutter speed was 1/250. I also tweaked the lighting, texture and clarity to make it stand out.

Sunset photography is so beautifully unique in that it is ever changing and no two are alike. This photo was taken at the overlook in Prospect park. After so many cloudy days this was a welcome change. &10084&65039

I took this in January of 2022 as I practice the rule of thirds. The Crossings Park is located in the Town of Colonie, New York, outside of Albany. Crossings Park is a 130-acre public park. The park has bike and running paths that stretch and connect up to 6.5 total miles, as well as a 3-acre pond located in the center.

I was just wandering around the city after a recent snowfall and remembered how I always liked this place. So I went over and found it with just a couple lights on inside and the overhead step light outside, and thought how cozy it looked.

When my days end coordinates perfectly with the setting of the sun... I couldn't resist stepping out of the car to take some shots of this glorious sunset. It's as if the shades were being pulled down, leaving behind silhouettes of the day. Left my camera home, but had my trusty iPhone available to fulfill my need to photograph. This photo was taken on the summit of Treadway Mountain in Ticonderoga on January 1st, 2024. This was my first day hike. Considering how warm it has been, I was not expecting any snow. But lo and behold, it was a Winter Wonderland up there. Just a perfect start to 2024!

Working on trying new things! Plucked this Puff out of my front yard flower bed. Used a small compact mirror to create the shot using natural daylight thorough the window. The black and white spoke drama with such a simple subject. Taken with Canon rebel t7 and efs 18-55mm f/3.5-6.6Settings 1/60 f5.6

As a deep space photographer, I like to take photos of outer space targets that our eyes cannot see. These photos require a lot of patience and a lot of clear nights reason why my telescopes are working almost every night when it isn't cloudy. Astrophotography is very different from all the other types of photography, a single photo sometimes requires tens of hours under the clear night sky but the result is very satisfying. In this photo, I would like to present to you the California Nebula

This is part of a huge street art display, a real gem in Leeds. I loved the different displays of hands walking, creates a real sense of movement and intrigue. Photo was taken around 11am. The light you see shining on the hand is from a wall light. Camera setting - F4.2, 1/400 shutter and ISO 200.
