Street Photography

Saturday 28 October
Palace Theatre - 10am - 2 Hours
Antonio Leary
People, cafes, vendors, street merchants, buskers, historic buildings, art installations and much more. The power of observation underpins the art of great street photography. Learning to "see" interesting detail is a practised skill and we introduce you to easy methods that will open your photographer's eye and expose you to a world that is alive with detail. The most rewarding part of the class is learning how to approach interesting people and have them willingly pose for you.

We will also go over settings, focusing techniques and lens choices common to street photography to help us capture those random chance encounters.

Join this session for tips on how to use your camera settings to creatively capture nature in a visually interesting way. We will be looking at composition, focus, and colour.

Many professional offices and places of business have large prints gracing their wall space of things such as fields of flowers, a butterfly perched on a leaf, and a single dew drop on a rose petal. These beautiful images are all around us in nature. It just takes that special "eye" to not only see it but to capture it in a way that will turn that simple little piece of nature into a beautiful piece of art. We will learn how to use different angles, light and shadows, and settings to make subjects pop.

Ever wonder how some images show the same waterfall two completely different ways and wondered what was the difference? How did Ansel Adams do it? Or you were attracted to the way a photograph can show a group of cyclists stopped dead in their tracks, or as one big colorful blur? Well, it's all in mastering your shutter speed. Opening creativity and your imagination to take your images to an exciting level. We will discuss how to stop motion dead in its tracks as well as the long exposures that capture it.

The scavenger hunt was fun and enabled me to have a starting point in what to look for. And reviewing it before hand did open up some dialogue which was helpful. However, I do wish there would've been more suggestions or tips and tricks on setting up the shots. For instance maybe ideas on different angles, composition etc for setting up the shots. We were kind of set free to explore but I could've done that at my own.
Great event. Exceeded my expectations. Street photography gave me the opportunity to use my 50mm. Lots of photo subjects. Elissa provided us with some foundation principles, had us practice and gave suggestions on photo opportunities (i.e. dogs, depth of field, color and textures). She was available to answer questions, provide advice and help with improving participants' efforts. Good morning for picture taking.
It was a fun, learning experience.

I took this session as I wanted to learn the core features of my camera and the key components I needed to understand in order to move forward with photography! Ivette, nailed it! I walked away from the class with knowledge and hands on use of these features which allowed me to implement after class. Getting to know ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture! Would totally recommend for the newbie seeking clarity as leaning your camera becomes overwhelming! Thanks Ivette, much appreciated!
I found the class to be very informative and helpful. Elissa was fantastic and so knowledgeable. I look forward to getting to know my camera better and taking future classes. Thank you for proving such a wonderful resource.
Elissa was a great instructor and provided helpful skills and tips. She was patient and did a bit of 1-1 with people which was fantastic!

This is a black and white edit of an image from my archives. The original was taken a couple years ago, and the colors were perfect for a monochrome edit as many colors of the spectrum worked well for the right contrast, which is essential for black and white.
