Ever wonder why that Quarter Pounder with Cheese looks so mouthwatering when you drove by the billboard, yet when you go to the drive-through right after to get one, it looks nothing in real life like it does in that photograph?

Ever wonder how produce is made to look so fresh and colorful with water droplets that seem to last forever? And we all have looked at a menu and wondered how they got the items to look so outrageously delicious? You would be surprised how simple it is to manipulate food in photography. It's all tricks of the trade! Personally one of my favorite subjects to shoot because subjects are usually colorful, there's a lot of creative leeway on how you light it, depending on what the purpose your image will be meant to serve.

Join me in a Three hour, Hands-On creative workshop in the art of Food Photography!

Introduction to Black and White Photography. What makes a good Black and White shot?

We will look at the contrast and using textures. How does the camera see the image and how do we create Black and White images in a camera or in post-production. We will look for some good examples and set some exercises.

What is Black and White Photography?
  • Black and white photography is a style of photography that involves capturing images without color. It uses shades of gray to create contrast, texture, and depth, which can give a timeless and classic look to photographs.
    Introduction to B&W Photography ~
In black and white photography, the absence of color can help to simplify the image, drawing the viewer's attention to other aspects such as composition, lighting, and tonality. It can also convey a sense of nostalgia or evoke a particular mood or emotion.

Ready to add flash to your repertoire? In this class we were discussing on camera flash, which if you didn't know is also 100% necessary in bright sunlight! Flash you see, is used not only as a main source of illumination in low light, but it's absolutely necessary as a fill source in bright sunlight or high contrast scenes. Necessary to stop action as well in many cases. We will discuss how to formulate your flash settings for either of these purposes, using flash as your main and your fill source using a simple equation of the desired amount of light you want to produce, and your distance from the subject. This formula will be discussed in detail bring your flash units. I'm going to look at them and show you how to use them, so please if you have your manual Bring It, that's very helpful!!! If you're already using your on camera flash, this course will still benefit you greatly! Basic and in-depth clarification of how to properly use when needed as well as some advanced techniques.

The scavenger hunt was fun and enabled me to have a starting point in what to look for. And reviewing it before hand did open up some dialogue which was helpful. However, I do wish there would've been more suggestions or tips and tricks on setting up the shots. For instance maybe ideas on different angles, composition etc for setting up the shots. We were kind of set free to explore but I could've done that at my own.

Great event. Exceeded my expectations. Street photography gave me the opportunity to use my 50mm. Lots of photo subjects. Elissa provided us with some foundation principles, had us practice and gave suggestions on photo opportunities (i.e. dogs, depth of field, color and textures). She was available to answer questions, provide advice and help with improving participants' efforts. Good morning for picture taking.

I took this session as I wanted to learn the core features of my camera and the key components I needed to understand in order to move forward with photography! Ivette, nailed it! I walked away from the class with knowledge and hands on use of these features which allowed me to implement after class. Getting to know ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture! Would totally recommend for the newbie seeking clarity as leaning your camera becomes overwhelming! Thanks Ivette, much appreciated!

This Rhododendron bush is now about 14 feet high, planted about 1976. The image was captured with a 90mm lens on a Sony a6700 camera body in between the rain showers. F22, 1/160 second @ ISO 1600. The telephoto lens gave me the compression in the view I was aiming for. I was hoping for the usual bumblebees pollinating, but with the wind, cool temperature, and intermittent rain showers, there were very few bees buzzing around.
